I wanted to post a few details from my big mountain bike ride last week in Colorado. I had read a lot about this trail, and was unsure how/if I was going to handle it. As you can see from the Garmin details, the first bit was a rather steep climb. At the top of the first climb (2.5 miles), and not knowing exactly what was ahead of me, I was seriously considering turning back. Living at sea level makes riding at 9,000 ft challenging, but my recent riding regiment had proved to be enough to let me continue. The next couple miles were a blast, lots of technical stuff, and a break from the climbing. However, the impending climb in the middle of the trail was the crux of the whole trail. Easily one of the most technical climbs I have had to negotiate, and long enough to test my endurance. Sadly, I wasn’t able to clean the whole climb, but I did stop within sight of the top, and the final few rocks. After that, it was all gravy. Beautiful cruising through aspen forests, and finally a wicked fast decent traversing down the Buttermilk ski slopes and back into the town of Aspen. Really a gorgeous trail, and now I have a mark to beat when I get back.
Looking back over the crux climb:

Cruising through high altitude Aspen Forests…

And the view before the scorching downhill…

Ext. Loop 8-12-10 by rchafin at Garmin Connect – Details.
So, Im trying to embed my morning ride as a blog post just to see how it goes. My new bike computer should allow me to show the data plots in my blog, and I thought that might be a neat addition. Click the View Details link for more info!

The Maurice hotel is arguably the nicest in Paris, and is situated just off the Louvre gardens. As I walked past I tried to capture a portrait of the bellman, but he quickly turned away and left me with this very smug profile. Apropos.

Bellagio Italy.
This is quite possibly one of the most beautiful places on earth. These are the actual colors. Its like a Thomsa Kincaid painting of a town, on a beautiful alpine lake, relocated to Yosemitie National Park…..an amazing place.
This is an HDR of the view of the pacific ocean from the beach just south of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
As previously noted, these are a few new images with some new HDR tricks….hopefully they will get better with some more work.
This image is a shot of the classic Tunnel View at Yosemite National Park. We had previously had bad weather for two days, and this was the first sign of a couple days of good weather.

Its been a while since I have posted, as the month of September has basically been a blur. None the less, pictures have been on my mind. I decided to rework a few of my HDR shots from several different trips over the last couple years. I finally read a really good tutorial from a blog called “Stuck in Customs” that specializes in HDR. Although I have only implemented about half of the technique, the results are much improved over the previous versions. The first two are the classic Tunnel View shot at Yosemite national park. The next on is a shot of the Pacific Ocean from the beach just south of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. And the last shot is of a beautiful street in Bellagio Italy. The last shot looks a little over done. However, the street really does look like something out of a Thomas Kinkaid painting and is the sun going down behind the pink building that makes the shot look surreal. If anyone has any thoughts Id love to hear them.

Gelareh’s birthday is today, and we are about to dive into a baker’s dozen of tasty cupcakes from Sugarbaby’s. Tasty. The picture above is Gelareh bundling up for a night at ~30°F in Rocky Mountain National Park……she’s a trooper.

A few more fun pics with Sadie. The first is more playing with the 50 1.4, and another great expression from Sadie doin’ what she loves. The second is more playing with off camera flash, and taken with the 17-55 2.8, with and SB-800 directly behind Sadie with a full CTO gel. Both cool shots for different reasons.
